US Grade 3 - 6
In this class, students will take a closer look at how to find the main and supporting details of a nonfiction passage with a hands-on approach. Students will be given a nonfiction passage to use in class as we walk through each step of identifying what the main idea would be and highlighting support details. We will then use the passage to fill in a graphic organizer to help students visualize how the supporting detail work together to make the main idea. Main Idea is a hard concept for many children, but with some strategies to help them feel successful in identifying the main idea and details, students will be on their way to being able to identify the main idea each time. This is one of my all time favorite skills to teach! It doesn't matter where students are academically or the grade they are in, this class will benefit any child that needs a refresher on finding the main idea and details of a passage.
Learning Goals
Students will be able to identify and explain the main idea of a passage.
