Class Experience

Magical Music Theory is a full music literacy programme using games to teach concepts of music theory. The concepts covered range from simple rhythm and pitch through to scales, key signatures and music symbols.

Students will need to print materials for use in class. Please ensure you are able to do this so that your student can participate fully in the games.

This class is ideal for students learning any instrument. Students may also take this class if they do not learn an instrument but are interested in learning how to read music.

Magical Music Theory has been developed by Suzuki recorder teacher Stella over her teaching career. Many students have successfully learned music theory using these fun games.

This ongoing course uses repetition of concepts and games so that students can develop a deep understanding of music theory. The materials used are designed to be bright and tactile to hold the attention of learners. The wide variety of materials lend themselves well to a variety of learning styles and students are empowered to learn rather than to be taught.

The ongoing sessions are designed to facilitate peer learning. As students become more confident with the materials they are encouraged to demonstrate concepts to newer learners in the class. This allows more experienced students to feel a sense of progress and accomplishment, while newer students in class learn quickly while working cooperatively.

Profile
Teacher expertise and credentials
I have been teaching Suzuki Recorder since 2013 in London. This method primarily teaches students to play by ear so I have used developed games to encourage music theory and reading, initially away from the instrument.
This method works well for all instruments, as well as for students who are interested in learning music theory as a stand alone subject.
