Class Experience

In this fun and active class, learners will sing songs about animals as we explore music and singing fundamentals. We will begin each class by reviewing proper posture and prepare to sing with stretches and breathing exercises. We will do some fun vocalizing techniques which help warm up our voices. These two things are important for learning to project our voices. We will also learn the vocal vowel sounds as this also produces a fuller sound.

We will practice rhythm and counting beats using the Kodaly method. Learners will tap and move to the music. They will also learn to listen to and repeat 4-beat rhythms.

We will use the notes on the Solfege scale (Do-Re-Mi, etc). Solfege is great because it incorporates multiple learning styles- auditory, kinesthetic, and visual. It helps students learn to hear pitch more accurately. Plus, it is fun! Learning the intervals made with Solfege also helps train singers’ ears and improves pitch-matching.

This class will have a lot of back of forth between myself and the singers. I will model and have the singers imitate me. As singers gain confidence, I may call on them to do some things individually. I like to keep the activities moving from one thing to the next to keep singers engaged and learning.

No prior musical knowledge is required. It is helpful to have taken my Do-Re-Mi: Music and Movement classes, but not necessary. My themed classes may be taken in any order.
Learning Goals

Learners will learn to engage their body, breath, and voice to become confident singers.
They will learn how to tap rhythms using the Kodaly method. They will also learn to sing and sign the 8-note Solfege scale.

Teacher expertise and credentials
I am currently taking a break from teaching.

Hello! My name is Ms. Michelle. I like to teach music classes because I love to sing and I love to teach children how to sing. I also enjoy teaching writing, grammar, and literature classes. I have been a homeschool teacher for 15 years. I have taught many different classes in homeschool co-op settings, such as music, writing, grammar, drama, history, literature studies, career exploration, and elementary science classes. I have also been teaching ESL to children in China for 3 years. I believe students learn best by exploring the concepts themselves either by reading about it, completing a hands-on project, writing about it, or acting it out. Some kind of output helps students master concepts and add skills to their toolbox. I am a visual and auditory learner myself, so I like to teach in a way that includes auditory, visual, and kinesthetic methods when possible. I look forward to meeting your learner!
