Students in this class will learn to build healthy singing techniques in posture, breathing, and tone in a dynamic small-group setting. Students will learn to be aware of their bodies as an instrument through stretching, posture corrective exercises, and vocal exercises. Each student will have the opportunity to sing in front of the class for individualized and personalized instruction. Only the teacher will make corrections for the students. Mistakes are how we learn skills. Singing is a skill and mistakes are encouraged. Students will be allowed to make mistakes in a friendly, positive, and supportive environment. Each class will build upon the knowledge gained in the previous classes in this course. Student are encouraged, but not required, to take the "Vocalize! Warm-Ups and Breathing Techniques for Young Singers" class as a prerequisite. Class 1: Posture and Breathing Class 2: Pitch, Tone, and Aural Skills (Ear-training) Class 3: Presentation and Performance

Drinking Straw - Students will be introduced to straw singing or semi-occluded vocal tract (SOVT) exercises and will need a straw to properly complete these exercises.

Dr. Smith has 16 years of one-on-one voice lesson teaching experience with students ages 9 and up. She has taught voice in the USA and India. She holds three music degrees in vocal music, including a Doctorate in Vocal Performance. Her former students have placed in international voice competitions, completed Masters programs in voice, and hold successful full-time careers in music. She has performed in the USA, Austria, India, and Switzerland. Currently, Dr. Smith, a mezzo-soprano, performs professionally as a soloist and chorister.
