Class Experience

In this class, learners will be able to practice and apply their phonics skills in reading single letter sounds and becoming confident in recognizing the tricky word ‘the’ and 'to' on sight. Learners will have the opportunity to learn and identify the single letter sounds (level 2/phase 2: s, a, p, t, i, n, m, d, g, o, c, k, e, u, r, h, b, f, l) and learn how to blend Consonant Vowel Consonant (CVC) words to read them.

Class will begin with introductions. We will then jump into a colorful and engaging PowerPoint presentation where students will be introduced to the letters and words using visuals. This will involve a lot of student interaction through speaking, repetition and voice variation.

Once we have practiced the letters sounds and blending then we will focus on early reading and comprehension skills. Next, I will be incorporating a fun hands-on activity providing an opportunity for the students to be creative while learning new words. It does not matter if the child cannot draw very well, using their pencil and allowing the learners to use their imagination will help them with their creative skills too. I believe – ‘every child is an artist’, just like the famous artist Pablo Picasso!

Learners are encouraged to interact throughout the class. The purpose of this class is to make learning fun, in a relaxed and creative atmosphere so that the learners can be comfortable while learning essential early reading skills. We will also make time for brain breaks!

Learners will have access to supporting documents and activities for no additional cost. This material will assist the learners with the learning objectives before and after class.

Learners will need to come prepared with their own paper and pencils and be ready to have fun!

📙Prior Knowledge:📙
This class is perfect for young readers starting out on their reading journey. Learners will be able to practice the apply their phonics skills in reading letter sounds. Learners need to be able to read most of the single letters sounds from level 2 or phase 2 to be able to start to read simple 3 letter words. If they do not pronounce the sounds correctly, I will support the learner with this. The only tricky words featured in this lesson are ‘the’ and 'to', making it ideal for a child who are beginning to recognize these words on sight. If they can read CVC words easily this lesson will be a little too easy for them. However, if they want to join, I will happily extend the learning through questioning and comprehension questions. Please message me before class to discuss.

📝Notes for parents:📝
~ All of my resources are written in British English as I live in the UK. Please note that British English is slightly different than American English. E.g., The spelling may differ: colour / color and organise/organize.
~ Phase 2 sounds are not taught in alphabetical order. They are taught in an order to help children to start making words more quickly.
The sounds are taught using the most commonly sounds first.

If you can't find a time or date that works for you or have some questions, please message me and I will try my best to accommodate your requests. I welcome class requests also.

I hope to see your learner in my classroom soon. 😀

Learning Goals

In this one-time class the learners will learn how to pronounce the listed level 2 (phase 2) phonic letter sounds from the book in the pure form and will learn how to segment and blend simple two and three letter words to read (VC/CVC). They will also have lots of fun discussing and drawing what they would see on their journey after reading the beautifully illustrated story.
