Class Experience

US Grade 3 - 6

Beginner Level

In this small-group class that meets twice a week, we will learn uppercase and lowercase cursive letters, how to connect letters into words, and how to copy sentences from print to cursive. I use Handwriting Without Tears along with my own tips and tricks I gained over 20 years of handwriting instruction. This curriculum works well for all learners, including learners with dyslexia or dysgraphia. I am very encouraging to my students and believe that the best way to learn is through a relaxed, fun environment.

Class Schedule
5 minutes- Introductions/Questions
30 minutes- Teach, trace and write the letters of the day.
5 minutes- Provide extra help as needed

Learners will be asked to trace letters on the screen using the annotation feature of Zoom. A video will be provided for those who do not know how to use this tool. Learners will also be asked to show their work on screen, so students will need to keep their cameras on throughout the session. We will then complete a portion of our worksheets leaving the rest for practice after the session is finished. I also provide an extra practice sheet for each letter. We will also learn to write our first names in cursive.

I base my instruction on the Handwriting Without Tears® curriculum but also use my own techniques that I have acquired over my 20 years of working directly with students. Learning Goals

Students will learn correct letter formation for both the lowercase and uppercase cursive alphabets.  Students will have a functional signature.

Other Details

Learning Needs

This class is designed specifically for learners who find handwriting challenging. I teach no more than 4 letters per session with plenty of time to practice during class. Additionally, I offer the video lessons upon request if needed.

Pre-Requisites

Learners should be able to write in print (this does not have to be mastered) prior to learning cursive.

My name is Stephanie and I worked as a school-based Occupational Therapist for over 20 years, helping children ages 3–21 in public schools. Most of the students I worked with were between 4 and 8 years old and had autism, ADHD, or learning differences.

I know that handwriting can be hard for many kids. My goal is to help your child feel confident and proud of their progress. I focus on building strong connections with my students and always use kind, gentle corrections. I often teach through group demonstrations and encourage students to share their handwriting struggles. This helps them see they are not alone.

I’ve completed all of the Learning Without Tears workshops and use both the Learning Without Tears and Size Matters Handwriting Programs in my classes. I believe the best way to learn is through fun, laughter, and engaging activities. I use humor and silliness to keep learning light and enjoyable!

I’m also very flexible. If your child needs to miss an ongoing class, just send me a message during that same week—before or after—and I’ll be happy to refund you for that session.

A Note from Me

I’ve lived with a chronic illness since I was 12, and in the past few years, it has sometimes affected my energy. I do everything I can to make sure it doesn't impact my classes, but once in a while I may need to cancel. I’m sharing this with you because I believe honesty and communication are important, and I want to be open with all my families.
