Homework

1 hour per week. Learners will complete the majority of their work while interacting with the video lessons. An additional activity will also be provided once a week for additional practice.

Grading

The assessment for this writing course involves learners copying the alphabet both before starting and after completing the class. Parents are encouraged to compare these samples, noting improvements in letter formation, size, and line placement. This comparison highlights the progress made throughout the course.

Class Experience

US Grade Pre-Kindergarten - 3

Beginner Level

This course is led by a retired occupational therapist with over 20 years of experience.  There are no live meetings; all instruction is delivered through video lessons and activity suggestions. This class is suitable for children who are just beginning to write or those who need a thorough review of lowercase letter formation.

Designed as an 8-week self-paced course, with one handwriting assignment and one optional hand skills activity assigned each week.  

In this course, we will use the Handwriting Without Tears and Size Matters Handwriting Programs to learn lowercase alphabet writing. These programs utilize simple and consistent language to enhance motor memory.

For each letter taught, I will post a video link. Each video is 5-7 minutes long, with students learning three letters per assignment. At the end of each video, learners can complete their worksheets along with me.

Additionally, each week I will provide a suggested activity to enhance finger skills and hand strength.   


DISCLOSURE: I am an Occupational Therapist. However, these classes are not considered occupational therapy treatment sessions and should not take the place of therapeutic interventions. I base my instruction on the Handwriting Without Tears® curriculum as well as my own techniques that I have acquired over my 20 years of working with students and teachers.  If you are concerned that your child has a developmental delay or a learning disability please seek help through your pediatrician.

Learning Goals

1. Learn the correct letter formation for all lowercase letters.
2. Identify the letter size and line placement for each letter.
3. Use multi-sensory activities to continue handwriting practice.

Learning Needs

All of my classes are intentionally designed to support learners of different abilities. I use consistent language when teaching, break down everything I do into small steps, and design my worksheets with strong visual cues.

Pre-Requisites

I recommend learners be able to write the uppercase alphabet and numbers prior to beginning this course.

My name is Stephanie and I worked as a school-based Occupational Therapist for over 20 years, helping children ages 3–21 in public schools. Most of the students I worked with were between 4 and 8 years old and had autism, ADHD, or learning differences.

I know that handwriting can be hard for many kids. My goal is to help your child feel confident and proud of their progress. I focus on building strong connections with my students and always use kind, gentle corrections. I often teach through group demonstrations and encourage students to share their handwriting struggles. This helps them see they are not alone.

I’ve completed all of the Learning Without Tears workshops and use both the Learning Without Tears and Size Matters Handwriting Programs in my classes. I believe the best way to learn is through fun, laughter, and engaging activities. I use humor and silliness to keep learning light and enjoyable!

I’m also very flexible. If your child needs to miss an ongoing class, just send me a message during that same week—before or after—and I’ll be happy to refund you for that session.

A Note from Me

I’ve lived with a chronic illness since I was 12, and in the past few years, it has sometimes affected my energy. I do everything I can to make sure it doesn't impact my classes, but once in a while I may need to cancel. I’m sharing this with you because I believe honesty and communication are important, and I want to be open with all my families.
