Homework
2-4 hours per week. Please note: Students will need to practice a minimum of 1-2 hours every week to stay on top of class material. Sight-reading fluency is essential to learning class pieces.
Assessment
I will offer feedback after students perform an exercise and, if needed, provide suggestions to help the student master the concept. Mistakes are a part of learning a musical instrument! So students should not worry if they play the exercise or a piece correct on the first try. Together we will learn how to progress through new music and learn new musical concepts.

Class Experience

Please note: This class picks up where Beginning Piano Level H leaves off. Prospective students should be able to read standard notation in C position and G position, be able to identify accidentals in music, understand how to use dynamic contrast (crescendo, diminuendo etc), and have an understanding of articulation markings. Sight reading music is essential to this class so prospective students should be comfortable with reading music in the Level 2B Piano Adventures series (material from Level H). In this class, students will continue to develop their sight-reading skills, learn how to play more expressively, read and play in different time signatures and continue to develop dynamic control and phrasing.

Please note: We will be using Piano Adventures Lesson Book Level 3A (2nd Edition) for this class. It is a required text for the class.

Week One: Go over review pages 4-5; discover ostinato pattern and play Sakura; review C, G and F major scales hands together.

Week Two: Practice simple exercises in the keys of C, G and F. Discuss binary or AB form in music. Play Court Dance and Court Dance Variation.

Week Three: Review pieces from week two. Discuss Alberti Bass and ternary form. Play Looking Glass River.

Week Four: Discuss syncopation and play Yellow Bird. Review accidentals. Learn an arrangement of Morning by Edvard Grieg.

Week Five: Review pieces from previous weeks. Discover the interval of a Seventh. Play exercises using the interval of a 7th.

Week Six: Review previous material. Discuss Common Time and Cut Time. Play pieces using common time and cut time.

Week Seven: Review previous material.

Week Eight: Review material from Level I. Prepare a piece of your choice to present to the class.
