Class Experience

In this circle-time style Kindergarten class, students will be immersed in the French language through pictures, stories, drawing, modeling dough, and lots of repetition. This class is for beginners, but it is taught entirely in French using pictures, props, repetition, and other comprehension strategies.

SERIES STRUCTURE

This class series is structured into Units, with each unit having 3 parts. Students must complete all 3 parts of one Unit before moving on to the next. For example, Unit 1 consists of colors, numbers, and letters, all of which need to be taken before students can start Unit 2. Within the unit, students may take classes in any order.

CLASS STRUCTURE

Each week, we will start with greetings. Students will practice saying hello and answering the question “How are you?” in French. I will guide students in telling us their name and favorite color each week by speaking to them one by one and having them repeat.

After greetings, students will be introduced to the colors. Each week will look a little different, which you may read in the “Class Breakdown.” Students will practice by using lots of repetition in different ways to help them fully absorb the vocabulary.

After colors, students will have a guided drawing activity. They will be able to watch me draw along with them, and I will explain what I’m drawing in French as I do it. I will also ask students to identify the colors I’m using. Then, each learner will be able to share what they made.

Finally, students will complete a color scavenger hunt. For each student, I will choose a color at random, and they will need to find something of that color to share with us. I will help each student share as well as having them repeat words.

CLASS BREAKDOWN

Week 1
Greetings
Colors - I will show a color on my screen, and have students repeat the color a few times. Then, I will show a few objects of that color and model their names (“red apple”) while having them repeat.
Guided drawing - students will draw different styles of flowers
Scavenger hunt

Week 2
Greetings
Colors - I will show a color on my screen, and ask students what color it is. The first person to answer will be a volunteer (or if no one remembers, I will model the first answer) then I will ask the same question to each student individually.
Guided drawing - students will draw a rainbow unicorn
Scavenger hunt

Week 3
Greetings
Colors - I will show an object on my screen, and ask students what color it is. I will rotate through several objects and repeat objects/colors.
Guided drawing - students will draw different-colored fruits and vegetables
Scavenger hunt

Week 4
Greetings (I will give each student a chance to do them on their own, but I will help if needed)
Colors - I will say “I like ______” using a random color. All students who like that color will raise their hands. Once students get the hang of it, I will let them choose colors as well. The color portion of this game will be without visuals unless a student needs help.
Guided drawing - students will draw an abstract design using as many colors as possible.
Scavenger hunt

Learning Goals

Students will learn colors red, orange, yellow, green, blue, purple, pink, black, white, brown, and grey

Other Details

Parental Guidance
Immersion classes can be difficult at the beginning when students don’t know the language at all. They may need your support when they don’t understand. Students may be muted at times (due to background noise, practicing raising hands/taking turns, or the type of activity) so they will need to know how to unmute or have a nearby adult to help. During our scavenger hunt, students will be given a random color to find. They may need help finding the object or remembering to come back to class once they have it.
Supply List
These supplies will be needed for EVERY CLASS:
Paper
Coloring medium
 1 file available upon enrollment
Language of Instruction
French
External Resources
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.

Profile
Teacher expertise and credentials
I have been learning French for 7 years now, from French 1 - French 5 as well as 2 years of immersion French classes. I am conversationally fluent and at a B2 level. I have tutored French immersion from May 2020 through August 2020 when the French immersion school near us closed for quarantine, and I've been teaching French through Outschool for 1 year.

I took the French CLEP test a few years ago and got maybe 5 points away from a perfect score while testing out of and getting credit for all the French classes at my local community college.

I also continue to take French lessons with native speakers, and I am working towards my Bachelors in French, which includes classes in advanced French immersion, French literature, and French education.

I also have my certification in TEFL (Teaching English as a Foreign Language), the principles from which I apply to my French classes.
