Homework
1 hour per week. Learners should play suggested typing games several times per week. Midweek drills will also be posted in the Outschool classroom. During week 3, I will ask for a 1-2 min video of the learners' fingers typing during a typing game (so that I can monitor correct finger placement).
Assessment
I will be monitoring their letter and word drills which they will type directly onto the interactive slides. We will take a typing speed test in week 5. I will ask them to produce typed sentences and paragraphs. During week 3, I will ask for a 1-2 min video of your fingers typing during a typing game (so that I can monitor correct finger placement).
Grading
Cumulative grade upon request.

Class Experience

US Grade 1 - 4
Beginner Level
This 5-week FLEX (pre-recorded) typing course can be done on the learner’s own time (assignments are posted in the Outschool classroom every Monday at 9am Eastern). PARENTAL GUIDANCE will be necessary (to one degree or another, depending on learner-age and speed with which the learners grasp new concepts).

This course is intended to be a “beginners” course for this age group. After this course, the learners can continue to practice the typing games we do in this course and improve accuracy and speed on their own (potentially without further coursework). They can also choose to take my 8-week typing/keyboarding course when they are of age (that course is for ages 9-13 and is intended to bring learners from beginners through advanced level). I also have a new Keyboarding 2 class for extra practice.

BENEFITS of flex format with Nearpod:
*type the drills at your own pace
*parents and teachers can monitor activity slides/drills
*can break the lesson up as you see fit (doesn't have to be done all in one sitting - just start where you left off in Nearpod)

ASSIGNMENTS:
*Weekly lesson video (this is me instructing the drills and activities)
*Nearpod activity slides/drills (matching games, mini quizzes)
*Typing games each week that match the skills taught that week (learners should play games several times per week for practice)

Learning Goals

Students will be able to type using 3 types of input: written word, dictation, and their own thought-processes (typing unique sentences and a paragraph). Students will begin to develop memorization of the keyboard so that they can begin to type without looking at the keys. Students will develop foundational typing skills required to further improve after the class is complete.

I took a semester-long, comprehensive typing course at the age of 16, and a college level computer course which required learning advanced key-functions. My one-minute speed test result is 72 words per minute and I have had many jobs which require a lot of typing. My mom went to secretarial school in the 60's and she types 90 words per minute! She gave me several “typing class” tips during the development of this class. Thanks, mom! :)
