Children learn to read by systematically training their brain to use phonics, phonemic awareness, fluency & comprehension. My personalized 1:1 tutoring fills-in OR prevents learning gaps, boosts confidence, and creates strong readers.

Class experience

US Grade Kindergarten - 5
To ensure effective tutoring, the teacher suggests meeting 3x per week. Book additional recurring meetings after the initial purchase.
Students will learn and progress at their own level in the following foundational reading skills:

phonological awareness
spelling-letter sounds
sight words
phonics / syllables / morphemes
reading connected text
spelling/writing instruction (letter formation if needed; sentence formation and mechanics; encoding words)
I am a certified reading specialist with a Masters Degree in reading. I have a strong interest in "how the BRAIN actually learns to read", and I base my instruction on teaching this to children. (Most people don't know that our brain is actually NOT wired to read!)
I have taught in a variety of capacities in public schools and universities. These roles include teaching kindergarten/first/or second grade classrooms, and work as a K-5 school Reading Specialist; teaching undergraduate reading courses at the university level; assisting new teachers in the role of Mentor Teacher; and training teachers in reading programs through school staff development sessions throughout California. I am now retired from public school teaching and enjoy bringing the joys of reading success to learners through Outschool!
Homework Offered
Students will practice their connected reading skills and sight words by practicing the stories or word lists taught during each session.
0 - 1 hours per week outside of class
Assessments Offered
Assessment is embedded into the SIPPS program and is used to determine next steps in instruction.
Grades Offered
This class includes multi-sensory learning activities and is personalized to support and meet the individual needs of learners with the kinds of language processing problems associated with dyslexia.
