Class Experience

US Grade 8 - 11
Beginner Level
This class is a foray into Junk Journaling. It's a trendy new hobby (you can see lots of examples on TikTok!) where you reuse your junk as parts of a collage.

What junk, you ask? Anything! Receipts, tags, bags, labels, notes, cards, stationary, stickers, tickets, etc! Anything you can tape, glue, or adhere into a journal or onto a paper.

This class is a great place to start. Students will learn about art concepts like composition and color theory. Each week, students will create one unique journal spread (started in class and finished on their own time).

This artsy new hobby promotes sustainability (reusing our junk) and offers a chance to make and document memories.

Learning Goals

Students will be able to create a junk journal spread.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Bachelor's Degree in Theatre Arts from Buena Vista University
I have been junk journaling myself for an extended time now. Some of the examples the students see in class will be spreads from my own journal!

My background is in the arts. I have a Bachelor's Degree in Theatre & Media Performance, and I am currently pursuing a Master's Degree in Creative Writing. While my focus of study may not be in the visual arts, I have spent many hours creating my own spreads, collecting junk, and being inspired by junk journalers online.
