Class Experience

As the history of art progressed into the 20th century more and more art groups and movements made names for themselves as they created. They produced manifestos and promoted their like-minded attitudes. Most of these groups were challenging art of the academy and historical art practices. Modern art was born; growing and changing rapidly.

At the end of the first decade of the 20th century, a group of men saw the world-changing, industry, development, machines, and inventions. They saw a future that was exciting, new, full of speed and promise. The Futurists movement began in Italy and spread around the world. They enjoyed the automobile, trains, ideas of war, and nationalism. These men saw the rapid change occurring in the world around them and wanted to experience it and show it visually. In this short class, students will learn about this art movement and how it revolutionized art and art history prior to WWI.
In this short class we will look at some of the most famous artworks from the Futurist movent and talk about why these works are so dynamic and revolutionary to the world. We'll see how futurism went on to influence future generations even though most of its artists died in WWI. Students will practice looking and describing art, as they practice describing art, and seeing this new style.

Learning Goals

Students will learn to both look and describe art. The stylistic differences that occur Futurism are difficult to describe but revolutionary to this point in history.

Supply List
I teach art history to college students and this is a section adapted from my regular lecture for students. Futurism is one of my favorite movements because it truly invades all aspects of life: writing, art, and even restaurants. My college students love hearing the recipes and seeing these early displays of motion and movement.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Hello,
I'm an art historian based out of Kansas. I've always loved art and I want to help you develop a passion for art and history. I've taught for five years everything from preschool to college, and I love to share knowledge. I believe learning should be fun and an open conversation with no limits. I want to help history come alive and become more memorable. I like to overwhelm my classes with facts, tips, tricks, and information. I firmly believe students will take what interests them and learn more. Leaving behind the things that didn't grab them, but its left waiting if they need it.

Please inquire about scheduling or topic requests. I love to learn what students are interested in.
I have a background in Indigenous studies and would love to connect with you directly.
