This class is an introduction to the battle of Gettysburg during the American Civil War. I will briefly cover the causes of the civil war, and events leading up to the battle. I will then go into why the battle was fought at Gettysburg, an overview of the battle, the aftermath, and the park itself today. The class will be structured in a lecture, and class participation format. I will share current photographs of the battlefield to show areas that were fought over that now are significant spots in the National Park. I will also show photographs from the time of the battle as well, along with important figure heads of the battle and civilans. Students will be able to ask questions and their will be class discussion as well on the topic and the pictures. Basic knowledge of the American Civil War would be helpful for the student, however it is not required.

Parental Guidance
This is a class about the American Civil War, focusing on the bloodiest battle of that war. Students should be prepared to understand that many soldiers died there, and also the topic of slavery will be discussed. Students should understand what a war is. I will NOT show any pictures of the deceased that were taken after the battle, but photos will show the damage to homes and buildings.

Teacher expertise and credentials
I have been a serious student of the Civil War for years. I own and have studied multiple primary and secondary sources on the war, along with maps and field guides. I have visited the Gettysburg National Park over dozens of times, and also other battlefields of the war. I have taken part in multiple Ranger tours, and attended lectures given by some of the most highly regarded scholars on the Civil War.
