Hands can be challenging to draw, but they don’t have to be! This class is perfect for students who enjoy drawing and want to improve their ability to draw hands. In this class we will learn about the anatomy of hands, how to observe, and how to translate our observations to paper. We will be paying special attention to proportion, but so many other art skills and elements will be covered along the way: volume, negative space, foreshortening, light, shading, and texture. Students are welcome to share their work, ask questions, make observations, and dialogue at certain times, and portions of the class will be in silence to allow for focused drawing.
Other Details
Supply List
Drawing or sketching paper preferred (but students are welcome to use plain white printer paper if necessary) Pencils: HB pencil, and preferably one or two with softer leads, such as 4B, 6B etc. (if no soft pencils are available, just the HB will still be fine for this introduction) Eraser: kneadable gum eraser is preferred, but any functional eraser that doesn’t leave marks will be fine Your hand: able bodied students with two hands will be asked to use their non-dominant hand as a model, if this is not possible, a photo reference of someone else’s hand will be acceptable. The preferred art supplies are available at any local art store.
External Resources
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Hello! I am a lifelong creative. I hold a BFA in Studio Art, and have an active studio practice. I currently work mostly in painting, drawing, and printmaking, but I love all sorts of making and have experience working with photography, fibre, installation art, audio, ceramics, and more!
I am passionate about conservation, the environment, world history, art history, and minority cultures, and these themes and connections come up in my classes as appropriate. Art always has context.
I have experience teaching art classes to children in galleries, schools, and community settings, and am excited to take this experience online to create dynamic learning experiences. I believe art is so many things, self-expression, discovery, skill-building, empowering, and healing. Whenever possible, I try to include in my classes opportunities to learn new skills alongside opportunities for personal expression: structure and creativity. I hope to help my students learn to notice the world around them and inside them and find ways to translate that visually.
Something fun about me: I love to explore! I love to travel, hike forest trails, and discover new places and experiences.
