Class Experience

US Grade 4 - 7
This class is intended to build on Prior IEW experience (at least through Unit 4) However many students without prior IEW experience are able to jump in after watching a brief overview video I provide. We will be building on the foundations of Key Word Outlining. In addition, students will be required to incorporate all Stylistic Techniques learned in other classes and students will be taught new Elements of Style. Topic/ Clincher and Title rules will be reviewed quickly.

Session 1 - We will spend time discussing "division of thought." Students will learn to think through and write a 5 paragraph paper on any topic by coming up with subtopics. This invaluable skill can be applied to any subject. I will take the students through an example together in class. For homework, students will come up with a topic they wish to write about and write 3 paragraphs on 3 sub-topics

Session 2 - I will introduce the elements for a solid and clear conclusion and introduction paragraph. Including dramatic openers and stating your opinion in a paper. For homework, students will write the introduction and conclusion of their paper.

Session 3 - We will cover several of the elements of style from IEW and work them into our papers for creativity and expression.

Session 4 - Students will finalize and edit their papers. I will provide feedback and students are welcome to post their papers for peer review.

Learning Goals

Students will complete 1 five-paragraph essay on a topic of their choice. The goal is that students will have learned how to think through a larger topic and break it down into smaller subtopics making it easier to write about. Have a clear understanding of the elements of an introduction and conclusion.

Via a video lesson, (Please note there are no live classes) I will introduce the new concepts. I will demonstrate new concepts by completing a sample for the class. The student will then chose a topic of their choice for their assignment. During the writing process, teacher-student discussion will ensure that the student is on track and feeling confident in their writing. Discussion topics and questions will be used to reinforce the concepts presented. Students will have an opportunity for work-sharing with their peers.

I love what IEW does for student's writing and confidence. It gives them a clear rubric for what is expected. My own children have been through IEW 3 times each! I taught IEW in a classroom setting for 6 years instructing students and coaching parents. I have expanded my teaching to the online platform and love connecting and encouraging a diverse group of students.
