Other Details

Learning Needs
This is a 1-on-1 tutoring class, so we work together at your speed, meeting your needs. So if you have a particular way you like to learn, I can accommodate that.
Parental Guidance
The nature of this kind of writing will ask students to share some potentially vulnerable pieces of information as part of the writing process. For example, sharing a hardship they have experienced is a key component to scholarship essays. As the teacher, I will never ask them to share anything they are uncomfortable with, but not sharing will impact the success of their essays.
Pre-Requisites
It's helpful if students come prepared with a college in mind so we have a starting point. Same with scholarships. Because scholarships are often so specific, I don't like to spend valuable class time on researching these.
External Resources
In addition to the Outschool classroom, this class uses:
Sources
Students will need internet for research. They will also need Google Docs to share their writing with me so we can edit and revise together.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Master's Degree in Psychology from Liberty University
Master's Degree in English Language and Literature from Western Governors University
Bachelor's Degree in English from San Francisco State University
As a credentialed English teacher, I have spent many years working with juniors/11th graders on their applications and essays. Prior to teaching, I was a college admissions representative and worked on the scholarship committee. I have visited hundreds of high schools in a number of states, meeting with countless students along the way.

One thing I learned from this experience is that EVERY student has a compelling and deserving story. Sadly, most students don't realize this. I can help them craft a narrative that not only helps them create their powerful essays, but helps them see their inner strength and resilience.

I am a single mom of two teens. Not only do I have four degrees, but I helped my son apply to 5 UC schools and get accepted to 4 of them. This process is not easy. It can be disheartening, tedious, and frustrating. If you let me help you with the essays, I am certain it will lessen the burden; I've been there. I can help.

As someone with an MA in Counseling, I am also experienced at providing a nurturing environment where students will feel safe to open up, be vulnerable, and share aspects about themselves that will fuel truly impactful essays.
