US Grade Kindergarten - 2
Beginner Level
In this class we will build on your previous knowledge of short and long vowel sounds as well as a few digraph sounds (-ch, -sh, -th). This lesson will explicitly teach when and why we use the spelling patterns -ge and -dge. We will use word chains to incorporate phonemic awareness as well as phonics skills. Together we will use word mapping (elkonin square style) to give students a tool to both spell and check their own spelling. If time allows we will read our decodable story together, this should be printed off before class starts. If we run out of time this resource should be used at home to reinforce what we learned and give your student a chance to practice with their new knowledge. This class is set up to reflect what would happen at the 'teacher table' time, using exercises that give immediate feedback and support for future literacy work.
Learning Goals
Learn how and why we use different spelling rules for the /j/ sound. Why we don't use the letter j to spell this sound, and recognize these rules in a natural setting (story).
