This class focuses on the science of Ancient Egyptian mummification. Why did the Egyptians mummify their dead, and where did the original idea come from? How come the process was never written down? How do modern Egyptologists know what the process involved? We look at pictures of actual mummies and decide ourselves if the process worked and if these bodies are preserved. Burying rituals, tomb decorations, Egyptian gods, and Egyptian art and history will also be discussed in conjunction to create a full picture of how mummification fit into Egyptian life. The class is part of a series of classes that cover various Ancient Egyptian topics, as well as Ancient Rome and Archaeology. Classes for younger ages (6-9) are also available. Please Note: This class, as well as all my Outschool classes plus many new ones, will all be offered in the fall/winter. The camps will become after school clubs, and my hope is these classes will help out parents with distance learning, as well as homeschool families.
Learning Goals
As this is a very intriguing subject to students, I am open to following the class's particular questions and inquiries. I have extra images and slides in case our conversation veers into something specific a Learner would like to investigate more thoroughly. Having taught about mummies for almost two decades, I am very comfortable knowing where the questions may go, thus I am always prepared for anything your student may bring up during class. Parental Guidance
Images of actual mummies, and the discussion of how a mummy is created will be covered in class. (For example: Discussion on removal of body parts, drying out skin, and burial practices.)
External Resources
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.

I received double degrees in Egyptology and Classical Roman Archaeology (minor in Art History) from The University of Michigan, and a graduate degree from Harvard University in Art and Museum Education. This allows a perfect way to combine my passions of education and ancient cultures! I have been teaching ancient cultures since the age of 15, have developed and taught programs from Pre-K up to seniors living in assisted homes, and every single age and ability group in between! I am also a private docent at the world-renowned NYC museum, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, as well as worked for decades as a professional museum educator in numerous large art museums here in New York City, the art museum capital of the world!
I enthusiastically transport us back in time, and incorporate my own collection of ancient artifacts in class, encouraging learners to engage with primary objects. I am a visual storyteller, and even founded "Museums With Marisa," an enrichment program for schools and libraries.
