In this 4-day camp students will learn basic pop-up techniques and make their own pop-up stories (mini books). No prior knowledge needed, just creativity! This course is for beginners. **This course was presented at the Outschool Summer Fair last year (May 2021)** Please see below supplies for this course. Students will cut, fold, and glue paper to create a standing Pop-up System (examples of fold will be provided in class) . This is a fun 3D project where students will experiment with cardstock paper and practice cutting and folding to create a pop-up card that "pops-up" when opened. We will focus on the "scoring" technique and on learning a few basic ways to make these cards. I will demonstrate each of the techniques and students will follow. Once the students become familiar with a few different techniques they will then focus on creating a fun story using the "pop-up" mechanism. Students will have to come up with a short story that will be told through this technique, creating at least 2 pop-up cards to tell the story. It can be just a picture story/ students could add some additional text if needed. I will monitor them and help them during the process and they will ask questions and practice. Let's have fun together! Class 1- students will learn about different kinds of paper that can be used to make these pop-up cards, we will focus on the scoring and the cutting technique. We will then learn the "staircase" or "box" method. After that students will make their own "box" designs. It can be a CHRISTMAS CARD full of gift boxes or even a BIRTHDAY CAKE, or stairs in a CASTLE! Students are encouraged to draw and decorate their cards to tell the story. We will learn how to glue two sheets of paper to create a standing Pop-Up System. Class 2- students will learn the "V" fold method. I will demonstrate and they will follow step by step. They will then practice a few different "V" folds in order to later create their own designs. It can be an ANIMAL or a HOUSE even! Students are encouraged to decorate and draw on their cards. We will review the previous class by practicing the "box" method as well. We will learn how to add the "accordion" technique to make our designs more exciting (if time allows). Class 3- students will learn to cut organic shapes, like circles and swirls. Students will then combine them with the shapes they already learned, like "V" folds and "box" method to create a unique card design. I will demonstrate new variations step by step and we will create different designs together (a building, a house, jumper, double jumper, mouth etc.) Let's learn how to make a BOAT, 3D HEART, WAVES, MOUNTAINS, TREES, and so much more! Class 4- students will come up with a short story that will be told through various pop-up techniques, creating at least 2 pop-up cards to tell the story. It can be just a picture story/ students could add some additional text if needed. Some of it can be done at home (brainstorming and some folds), but most of it should be done in class (drawings or text as well). Students will then talk about their projects and their stories. Students are encouraged to draw and decorate their cards to tell the story, add other elements like- sparkles, beads, stickers etc.!
Learning Goals
Students will experiment with a variety of paper of different sizes, colours and thickness and practice cutting and folding different shapes (organic and geometric). The result is to have fun and create a mini-book by adding some drawings to complete the story.
They can even decorate the card the way they like with the materials they already have.
