The text will be on varied types of genre each week from such as: Realistic Friction, Fiction, Folktales, Fairy Tales. Mysteries, Nonfiction, Informational Biographies and even Poetry. The third-grade ongoing guided reading curriculum develops comprehension and fluency and incudes many different types of reading strategies applied to the different genres such as: reading for the main idea, using context clues, developing inferencing skills, drawing conclusions, developing summarizing skill, comparing and contrasting, author's purpose, finding text structure, and asking and answering questions. The components of each lesson includes: A preview of the text and review of specific vocabulary related to text and phonemic awareness. A specific reading skill such as questioning and inferring and a reading strategy or ways to help the reader achieve the reading goal. After the reading is completed, the students will respond to specific questions about the new skills. The second meeting of the week the student will be reintroduced to the weekly text and review prior lesson, vocabulary, reading skill and strategy then reread and practice the text for fluency and continue to apply their newly learned reading skills. Teacher expertise and credentials
New Jersey Teaching Certificate in Elementary Education
Master's Degree in Education from Georgian Court University
As an elementary classroom teacher, I have taught reading through guided reading for many years. Each type of genre offers new and explicit reading skills and strategies that students are able to apply, use and retain the information that they are presented and have read. Along the way they are building fluency and gaining in their reading abilities. I have seen young readers grow and develop newly found literacy skills in both reading and writing about reading that foster their independence. I have seen students achieve success and growth with starting a new beginning in guided reading.
