Hello & welcome!

I'm Mrs. Ott and I teach primarily English classes. I’ve been teaching for over 20 years, ranging from preschool to adults. I earned my B.A. in English Education in 2001, and taught high school English, Creative Writing, and Theater before having my six kids. I've always loved reading and writing, so this was a natural fit for me!

As my kids grew, my oldest three just weren't getting what they needed from their public school. I had always been teaching them through enrichment at home, so they asked me to try homeschooling them. I was nervous at first, but I really wanted them to get away from "one-size-fits-all" schooling and explore their passions and interests, so I decided to try it for a year. Six years later, we are going strong and loving it! My six children range from being identified as gifted to having ASD, so I am familiar and comfortable with all types of learning styles; however, my specialty is breaking down concepts to the BASICS and taking it step-by-step, especially for students who struggle or lack confidence in their abilities.

I love teaching because it opens up kids' eyes to something new. Watching them make a connection from literature to life or seeing grammar & writing concepts finally "click" is such a joy for me! When I can unlock and nurture a student's passion, it's so rewarding. My goal is always that each of my students comes away with new knowledge and a new appreciation for the subject at hand. So to each parent who entrusts a small part of their child's education to me, I say, "thank you!"

Teacher Policies and Procedures:
• In all academic classes, homework assignments are due before the next class (or by the due date set by the teacher) to receive grading & feedback. Assignments are "batch-graded" by the teacher and are returned within 48 hours of the due date in most cases. Assignments are only accepted in the following formats: MS Word, Mac Pages, or Google Docs (unless otherwise specified within the classroom).

• My office hours are generally noon–5pm EST Monday–Thursday. I try to respond to all non-homework messages within 48 business hours. Messages should ALWAYS be sent using the private message feature within the classroom or here within my teacher profile page and NOT as classroom comments on posts.
