After a quick review of basic parts of speech and diagramming, this class will move quickly on to writing and diagramming more complicated sentences. Students need a basic understanding of parts of speech, and I will offer a “pre-class” for anyone who wants a quick review. If a student is already writing basic sentences and wants to further their writing abilities, this class would work well for them. Week 1 will be focused on introducing the idea of “compound” in a sentence – compound parts of speech and compound sentences. This will be building on students’ understanding of a simple sentence. We will quickly move to diagramming compound parts of speech and then compound sentences. Week 2 will begin with a review of diagramming compound sentences. We will then move on to the concept of complex sentences, starting with Adverbial subordinate clauses. After that, we will continue to work on all three types of subordinate clauses. Week 3 will continue to review diagramming compound sentences but also start diagramming complex sentences. Week 4 will begin with the class writing their own compound and complex sentences. If there are enough students in the class, students will then practice diagramming and checking each other’s sentences. The class will be taught with a combination of in-class explanations and demonstrations and in-class practice sentences. Students will usually be working with the whole class or individually but will occasionally have the chance to work in small groups. By the end of the 12 sessions, students should understand the how to write and check their own compound and complex sentences.

Although most of my classroom experience was in middle school, I have taught a variety of subjects and ages for over 25 years. I have taught diagramming as an important skill for many of those years. I have also now taught several classes on Outschool.
