US Grade 5
Fifth grade math can be daunting for students and parents alike. Luckily, I'm on a mission to make 5th grade math MAKE SENSE to your child and to help your child have a little fun along the way. I enjoy building relationships with my students and use a multi-sensory approach in my lessons, teaching with a lot of hands-on and visual activities. Practice is necessary but shouldn't be boring, so I often use games and small group work (break out rooms) as ways for learners to gain confidence with new skills. Classkick and Google Jamboard will be used in some classes as a way for students to independently or collaboratively practice a skill and allow me to provide students with feedback. Blooket will be used in some classes to play games to practice new skills. None of these programs require a log in, student account, or email address. This fast-paced ongoing class is designed to cover all the standards/skills in the 5th grade math curriculum (as laid out by Common Core State Standards). While using CCSS as a guide to make the course more universal, the class will focus on the standards, not necessarily the strategies (unless they are helpful in building a conceptual understanding of the skill). Each class will focus on a specific skill and learners will be provided with follow up materials (worksheets or online resources) for extra practice. I am happy to provide feedback for follow up assignments but due to the drop-in nature of ongoing classes, questions will need to be addressed through learner messages, not in the next class. There will be no formal assessments/grades given. Parents should determine mastery based on how students do with their independent work/follow up assignments. Class materials will be created by me or copyrighted materials which I have permission to share. If you have a question about whether your child is ready for a specific skill, please message me to ask what the pre-requisite knowledge is as there will not be time to do an in-depth review the fourth grade standards. The course is split into four quarters with breaks for major holidays. Below is the schedule of skills to be taught. Adjustments may need to be made based on holidays and other schedule conflicts. QUARTER 1 – Place Value & Number Operations – 8 weeks Sept 5 – Lesson 1: Place value with powers of 10 Sept 13 – Lesson 2: Decimals to the thousandth in expanded form Sept 19 – Lesson 3: Compare decimals Sept 26 – Lesson 4: Round decimals Oct 3 – Lesson 5: Add and subtract decimals (minor skill focus: perimeter) Oct 10 – Lesson 6: Number patterns Oct 17 – Lesson 7: Prime vs. composite numbers & divisibility rules Oct 24 – Lesson 8: Write and evaluate expressions Oct 31 - NO CLASS QUARTER 2 – Number Operations – 8 weeks Nov 7 – Lesson 9: Multiply by a 1-digit factor using standard algorithm Nov 14 – Lesson 10: Multiply by a 2-digit factor using standard algorithm Nov 21 – Lesson 11: Understand multiplying decimals (using an area model) Nov 28 – NO CLASS - THANKSGIVING BREAK Dec 5 – Lesson 12: Multiply decimals using standard algorithm Dec 12 – Lesson 13: Divide by a 1-digit divisor using traditional long division Dec 19 – Lesson 14: Divide by a 2-digit divisor using traditional long division Dec 26 – NO CLASS - WINTER BREAK Jan 2 – Lesson 15: Divide decimals by whole number divisors Jan 9 – Lesson 16: Divide decimals by decimal divisors QUARTER 3 – Fraction Operations – 11 weeks Jan 16 – Equivalent fractions, converting between improper fractions and mixed numbers Jan 23– Add and subtract fractions with unlike denominators Jan 30 – Add and subtract mixed numbers Feb 6 – Fractions as division Feb 13 – Multiply fractions by whole numbers Feb 20 – Multiply fractions by fractions Feb 27 – Multiplying mixed numbers (minor skill focuses: scaling and area) Mar 6 – Divide a fraction by a whole number Mar 13 – Divide a whole number by a fraction Mar 20 – Solve dividing fraction word problems Mar 27 – Solve fraction word problems (mixed review of addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division) QUARTER 4 – Measurement, Data & Geometry – 9 weeks Apr 3 – Create and interpret line plots Apr 10 – Convert measurements (customary and metric) Apr 17 – NO CLASS - SPRING BREAK Apr 24 – Understand volume using unit cubes May 1 – Find volume using a formula May 8 – Volume of composite figures May 15 – Plot points on a coordinate plane to show location May 22 – Graph on a coordinate plane to show relationships May 29 – Classify 2-dimensional shapes (focus: quadrilaterals) Jun 5 – Classify 2-dimensional shapes (focus: triangles and other polygons) ***Check out my Draw Like a Mathematician class to help your child learn strategies for solving complex word problems.***

Teacher expertise and credentials
Maryland Teaching Certificate in Elementary Education
Eighteen years as a public school teacher in Maryland and two years as an Outschool teacher have provided me the opportunity to teach learners from diverse backgrounds with a variety of learning styles. I began my teaching career in elementary school, teaching all subjects and earning my Masters of Education with a certificate in Gifted Education from Johns Hopkins University. Later, I added both Middle School Math: 6-9 and ESOL Pre-K-12 certifications to my professional certificate. Most recently, I taught middle school math, working with both accelerated students and those with Special Education needs. Because of my varied experiences, I have many strategies to help all kinds of learners.
Math is my passion because while there may only be one correct answer, there are often many different ways to solve the same problem. Exploring those different ways and finding a method of solving with which each learner feels most confident is what I love to do. I like to incorporate hands-on strategies, games, and interactive activities into my lessons to make math less scary for reluctant mathematicians and more engaging for everyone.
When I’m not thinking about math, I enjoy baking, cake decorating, drawing, working in my vegetable garden, and sewing. In my spare time, I can be found hiking, kayaking, bird watching, doing a puzzle, or assembling furniture. I look forward to meeting your learner!
