Class Experience

Students will be assigned an identity--a real person at Gettysburg--at the beginning of the class and as the battle progresses, they'll find out the fate of the person they're assigned. We'll look at what led up to the battle, and then examine each day in detail. There will be discussions, knowledge checks, and either individual or team assignments to identify alternatives to the decisions by key leaders during the battle. In between sessions there will be research assignments.

The course breakdown by session is as follows:
Session #1: Why did Lee choose to invade Union, the order of battle (units, commanders, and force structure) for both armies, how did Vicksburg figure in to this fight, how was Gettysburg chosen as a battle site, who were the key leaders on the first day of fighting, and what happened on the first day of fighting and where did the fighting take place.
Session #2: What situations were both armies at the end of the first day of fighting, the role of Jeb Stuart, the importance of the Confederate's cartographer, what did the Union do to prepare for the fight on Day 2, what was Lee's plan of attack on both flanks, the key leaders on the second day of fighting, where did the fighting take place, and alternatives to Lee's plan.
Session #3: How did both armies prepare for the fighting on Day 3, the critical role of artillery on the 3rd day, key leaders on the 3rd day, understanding what Pickett's charge was like, where did the fighting take place, debating if should Meade have counterattacked, and the military and political significance of Gettysburg.

Learning Goals

1. What led up to Gettysburg and the circumstances that resulted in the battle.
2. Key events and key leaders each day of the battle--what was going on and why it mattered.
3. The aftermath--what were the consequences of Gettysburg for both the Confederacy and the Union.
4. Alternative decisions that might have changed the result of the battle.
5. The military and political significance of Gettysburg to both sides.
6. An accurate understanding of the geographic and topographic layout of the battlefield and how it influenced the result of the battle.
