Get Set! Building Movie Sets for Stop Motion Animation
Class experience
In this one-hour workshop class, I will show students several techniques for using readily-available objects from around the house to build small tabletop sets for shooting stop motion animation. We will focus on flexibility and stability in set design. Sets need to be easy to put together and arrange but also need to stay put while you’re moving characters with high levels of precision. We will discuss the usefulness of basic cardboard box sets for doing test shoots, as a way to do some...
Students will learn basic concepts of set design for stop motion animation test shooting, including flexibility of arrangement, stability of placement, how to prepare for making objects move through a scene, and how to think about camera angles from one set to the next.
I think stop motion is an excellent combination of the arts, science, math, and technology. As an art form, it is accessible and approachable to anyone, regardless of background knowledge. I have been making stop-motion animated films for nearly thirty years, starting when I was a middle school student. I currently run The Wolfbird studios, a learning-focused animation and interactive media studio. The most recent stop motion animation, created in collaboration with a dance professor at a nearby university, is currently on the festival circuit and has already started winning awards: most recently Best Experimental Film at the Frostbite International Online Film Festival.
Any stop motion animation app is appropriate for this class, but students do not need to download any apps to follow along with the class. Students can use any materials available on hand in their homes to practice animation techniques during and after this class (e.g., dolls, model cars, legos, coffee mugs, building blocks, cardboard boxes, coins, etc.)
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
