Class Experience

This one-time class will cover the calculations associated with gravity. We will have fun doing gravity experiments (dropping things) and discussing the scientific method of writing up experiments. We will discuss what worked and did not work in the experiments and what the results mean. If I know ahead of time and if there is time in class, I can have objects prepared to drop that a student would like to see. In one class as per student request, we dropped an egg off our outdoor balcony! I like to involve students during the class. Students may ask questions at any time and I will ask open ended questions that students may answer if they wish to. No required knowledge is needed for this class. The gravity calculations are straight forward. If a student is unfamiliar with the idea of basic formulas, they will still enjoy the class. Some students may just have fun watching objects drop and will take away some basic ideas of science. Other students may be very involved and actually write up a science report afterwards. I'm quite willing to look at any reports provided if any student would like this.

Learning Goals

Students will understand more about gravity and related calculations. Students will also gain a sense of the scientific method and how to write a report.

Bachelor's Degree in Science from University of Waterloo
Hi, I'm Trudy Field. I have a Bachelor of Environmental Chemistry degree from the University of Waterloo. I love to make teaching fun. Students learn best when learning is fun. I like to make the class interactive and entertaining.

I have always loved to teach and coach people. I love those a-ha moments when someone learns something new and experiences the happiness in knowing a skill has been mastered.

I like to tutor chemistry, physics, biology, and math courses at a junior high and high school level. I like to teach fun parts about these subjects and the fundamentals that would help a student understand parts of high school courses. I have tutored many high school students.

Coaching figure skating has been a passion of mine for over twenty years. I like to figure out how people learn and to interact with different personalities.

I believe students learn best when taught in a fun way. I like to allow a bit of autonomy in a class. While coaching skating, I offer choices of what we'll learn next - like spins or jumps. We'll inevitably cover both during that session or by the next session. I like to try to be fun in class and will allow a little bit of fun after setting guidelines to ensure learning is still the priority.

A fun project I did this winter was build a backyard skating rink! I did it through stomping the snow and then flooding the backyard with water. My son and I rigged up a simple flooding machine too!
