Class Experience

US Grade 6 - 9
This class is a continuation of my Forensic Science series. The types of evidence/fields of investigation covered include:

1. Forensic Epidemiology
2. Computer Forensics
3. Forensic Entomology
4. Forensic Linguistics.

With each area of specialization, we will examine case studies and engage in hypothetical scenarios.

The second section of the course will examine forensic science research, which will allow the students to design their own projects. For students interested in designing experiments involving synthetic blood, BlueStar, or latent print development, parents will be instructed on ordering necessary supplies (it is not necessary to do an experiment with any of these items, however). The types of experiments that students can choose may include:

1. Detection of blood (synthetic blood) in various conditions / on various surfaces
2. Development of fingerprints on various surfaces, and with a variety of powders
3. Movement of a liquid downward in different types of soil
4. Development of a model to determine weight by measuring the depth of shoe impressions in soil

Students may choose other topics that fit into the area of forensic research. We will also go through a mock crime scene which involves several experiments that our "lab" conducted, and which the student have to evaluate. Student suggestions on improvements to the experiments will result in evidence necessary for solving the case.
Learning Goals
Students will learn how specialized types of evidence are found, collected, and analyzed. They will also learn about the probative value of various types of evidence in the context of an investigation. Additionally, students will learn how to design a forensic science experiment, which they can complete at home.
