Class Experience
Does you child want to participate in a science fair? This course will help them learn all the necessary components, steps, and procedures to creating a unique and successful science project. Class Topic Overview: During this four week flex course, students will work through all the requirements for completing a science fair project. The breakdown of topics covered each week is as follows: Week 1: A.) Engineering Design vs. Scientific Method B.) Brainstorming Ideas for Your Project Week 2: A.) Writing a Proposal: Things to Think About in Advance B.) How to Organize Your Project, and Complete Background Research Week 3: A.) Methods, Plans, Materials, and Conducting Experiments B.) Gathering and Recording Data, Communicating Results, and Drawing Conclusions Week 4: A.) Board Decoration/ Presentation B.) The Interview Class Procedures: Each week, two video presentations will be posted on each topic. Students will be provided with notes on the presentations. Students will work in stages on their own science fair project independently at home. They will create the assigned section of the project following each week's presentation. Videos or pictures of their work will be posted in the classroom for teacher and peer feedback. Students are expected to interact with their peers by offering feedback or asking questions about each stage of their project. This interaction is highly effective in helping students work through the steps of the project and edit and revise their work. The bulk of the class will be taught by the teacher providing information in video lecture form, but there will be a great deal of time for questions and whole group discussion of topics via the classroom chat/ posting platform. Goal: By the end of the course, students should have worked all the way through the planning, designing, and carrying out of either a scientific method or engineering design project.
Learning Goals
Students will learn the steps of both the scientific method and the engineering design process.
Other Details
Parental Guidance
Parents may need to assist their student with research on their project when using the internet. Once the student designs and plans their project, depending on their chosen topic, parents may need to superview the building of their prototype or conducting of their experiment. Students will be told explicitly not to plan a project that needs a great deal of parent assistance.
Supply List
Students will need paper and pencil for notes and planning. Depending on the project they design, materials for their project will vary greatly. In all cases, students are always encouraged to keep their materials to a minimum cost, and should try to use pre-owned or recycled materials. A trifold board will be needed if they choose the complete the final project for presentation. At the end, student created documents will need to be printed for their science board.
