"Fireworks are an application of chemistry and engineering: you need good chemistry to get the effects up in the sky and good engineering to make sure they get to the right altitude and burst at the right time." -- John Conkling, former director of the American Pyrotechnics Association During this course, we will explore the chemistry, physics, and engineering behind the controlled explosion seen in fireworks. To do this, we will mainly utilize videos and diagrams; however, there will be a craft element at the end of the class that will mimic the force of the firework rocket launching. For the craft, you will need a paper cup, balloon, scissors, small pom-poms/cotton balls, and a rubber band that will fit snugly around the cup. (If possible, I recommend having extra cups, balloons, and rubber bands on hand, in case any construction issues arise.) Students do not require any specialized background knowledge to enjoy learning about fireworks in this class! Please note: The instructive portion of this class will likely take only 30-45 minutes depending on the number of questions asked by students. The remainder of the time will be set aside for craft construction.

Hello parents! I am so excited to have this opportunity to connect with you and your children. I have spent the last decade preparing myself for a career in science education. I have focused my educational career on secondary education, earth science education, and educational technology. I love the sciences and believe they require a creative, innovative, and passionate approach in order to spark children's curiosity about the natural world. I am so passionate about sharing STEM science with homeschool families that I even started a website to teach parents more about STEM education. Through Outschool, I hope to also be privileged enough to teach your children more about science, technology, and engineering!
