Class Experience

Beginner Level
In this one time, online, live class, we will explore the difference in density between oil and water.
Students will get a chance to learn about making a prediction, hypothesis, observation and conclusion while we work through the experiment. Students will make predictions about what will happen when the oil is added to the water, make their own observations and formulate a conclusion. This experiment will have two observations as we will also add in liquid food colouring and talk about the density of drops compared to the oil.

By the end of this session, students will know that oil has less density than water and liquid food colouring. Students will observe what happens when one drop of food colouring is added to the mixture and then when multiple drops are added to the mixture. (this is the best part)

No previous knowledge is needed.

This is a safe experiment however, it can get messy. Younger learners might need some assistance to pour the oil into the jar/bottle.

Learning Goals

Learn The Scientific Method. Practice making predictions and determine whether they are correct.

Other Details

Learning Needs
Everyone is always welcome in my classes. If your learner has a unique need please let me know and I will alter my lesson towards to learner to make them most successful.
Parental Guidance
Younger students my need a supervisor to help pour the liquid and drop food colouring drops in one at a time.
Supply List
If the students wish to follow along with the teacher:

1 cup oil
1 cup water
1 clear jar to hold 2+ cups of liquid ( I will be using a mason jar)
a package of liquid food colouring 4 colours or more preferred
External Resources
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
