Telling a story involves words, characters, and plots, but making a film involves another thing: shots. In this interactive course, budding filmmakers and cinephiles alike will learn to identify different types of camera shots then test their newfound knowledge as a class on Kahoot. Students will then watch a couple of scenes from the film Dead Poets Society and discuss how the filmmakers use camera shots to support the story. Afterwards, students will learn how to create a shot list using a scene taken from the film. While not required, students are encouraged to watch Dead Poets Society before class to prevent spoilers from spoiling the film. They are also asked to have a working webcam and microphone to ensure an active learning environment. Other than an interest in film, no prerequisites are required.
Learning Goals
Students will learn about the basic types of camera shots used in film and how they support a story.
