Is your learner looking to learn more about writing contemporary poetry, join this flex class and dive into a month long exercise in creating original poems! Students can view the video on Mondays, submit their poems by Wednesday, and then I will reply with positive feedback by Friday. Below is the weekly agenda for this course: Week 1: Metaphors and Similes Be With You Poetry - writing in comparisons Week 2: Paint Swatch Color Poetry - using color imagery in poetic language Week 3: Magnetic Poetry - playing with these little tiles from the 90s to create original work Week 4: Extreme Poetry - pairing tiny vs. huge images in poetry Students will write 3 mini poems, or one 12+ line poem, per week, and I will enjoy reading and commenting on them. This class covers all my favorite poetry writing exercises that I have participated in, and then taught, over the last 20 plus years. Students of all levels are welcome as I will be providing explanations, review of poetic terms, and detailed prompts for each individual student to shuffle through before they create. I am a positive and passionate instructor who believes that a writer is one who writes! All that is required is a genuine interest in poetry writing. Come with an open and creative mind to enjoy this special way to unlock the imagination.
Learning Goals
Students will complete 3 mini poems, or one 12+ line poem per week over the course of 4 weeks. Students will also dive into: metaphors, similes, figurative language, symbolism, free verse, rhyme, personification and much more.
