I will show the students how to create a colorful, mixed media, collage portrait in Ms. McLeod Bethune’s likeness. Students will paint backgrounds with acrylic paint in self-selected colors. They will layer the painting with a photo (print-outs will be provided) of the featured historical figure while using 3-D paint and printed quotes. Students will have the option to include more elements for added texture such as fabric, rhinestones, buttons, yarn, newsprint and magazine clippings. The collage technique we will be implementing is beginner-friendly, therefore students will not have to know how to draw in order to produce beautiful, powerful, artistic pieces.

Teacher expertise and credentials
I present my historical information on my lived experience as an African-American in the United States of America coupled with my masters degree in social work which has allowed me to study the affects of historical events and laws in the United States of America on its citizens. My masters degree has also trained me to handle and manage difficult situations, sensitive information and empower marginalized groups in America. Because of my passion for history, educating young minds and accuracy, I spend hours on researching and crafting each class that I offer and work hard to represent marginalized voices in my classes.

I have also taken undergraduate courses in African-American history under expert professors. I have over 10 years of teaching in and outside of the the traditional classroom. I have 10 years of professional experience working with primarily African-American youth in foster care which equipped me to handle delicate matters with professionalism and tact. Cumulatively, I possess over twenty years of experience working with and teaching youth of all ages. I have worked as a childcare worker, case manager, teacher, homeschool parent and have volunteered many hours in children's programs. I am also an avid crafter with sewing skills. All of these qualifications have lended themselves to me successfully teaching African-American history on Outschool with excellent reviews from parents and consistent 5-star ratings.
