In this flex class students will get an introduction to American Sign Language. I will post a new video each week. Each video will cover new signs for the weeks topic and the requirements for the students response video. Students will be able to post a response video each week and I will provide feedback on their video and be involved with any discussion posts. There is no time requirement for the video posts and there are no live meetings in this course. When a student posts in discussion feed they have the option to use video or text. Each week a new bonus homework assignment and a student interaction video will be available for students who want to get the most out of this flex course. I love American Sign Language and I enjoy teaching this beautiful language. I have taken 4 years of formal ASL classes. I have also taught middle school ASL in a traditional classroom setting. I was also a 1st grade teacher for a few years! I also enjoy signing songs in ASL for different events. I have been teaching on Outschool for a year and have taught over 500 students!
When a hearing person teaches ASL they are not just about teaching individual signs but rather teaching the whole package of ASL and Deaf culture. ASL is not just a signed version of English. It is made up of facial expressions, body language, non verbal signs, grammar and Deaf culture. The culture and community is so rich with history and values that should be taught right alongside the grammar and signs of ASL. When learning and teaching ASL we all need to honor the language and culture by learning every aspect.
