In this Level 2 piano improvisation class, students will build on their foundational knowledge of piano playing and dive deeper into the world of improvisation. Designed for students who are comfortable with basic piano techniques, including the C Major scale, counting beats, and basic chord progressions, this class will help learners develop a more nuanced understanding of improvisation through a series of engaging and interactive lessons. What Will Be Taught? This class will cover essential topics for expanding your improvisation skills. Students will learn advanced chord progressions, how to use chord inversions, and how to integrate various rhythmic and melodic patterns into their playing. We'll explore creative ways to combine these elements into original melodies, and emphasize the importance of dynamics and emotional expression in improvisation. By the end of the class, students will feel confident in their ability to improvise and create their own unique piano compositions. Topics Covered: Review of essential piano techniques, including the C Major scale, counting beats, and basic chords Advanced chord progressions and their variations Chord inversions and how they can change the sound of your improvisation Rhythmic and melodic improvisation patterns Combining patterns for creative and dynamic playing Creating original melodies using chord progressions and improvisation techniques Exploring dynamics and expression to add emotion to your playing Class Structure: Each week, we will meet for a live, interactive class where we’ll work together to practice and apply new skills. The class is structured around hands-on learning, with plenty of opportunities for students to play along, experiment, and receive direct feedback. During the lesson, I will guide the group through exercises and provide tips on technique, expression, and creativity. We will work together as a class, and you will have opportunities to practice individually as well as with the group. Teaching Style: My teaching style is interactive, supportive, and student-focused. I strive to create a relaxed and encouraging environment where students feel comfortable experimenting and making mistakes, knowing that this is a natural part of the learning process. I use a variety of methods, including live demonstrations, guided practice, and play-along sessions to ensure each student is actively involved in the learning process. How Much Will Learners Get to Interact with You? Interaction is a key component of this class. In addition to the instructional content, students will have plenty of opportunities to engage with me directly. Here's how: Weekly live sessions where we’ll work together to apply the concepts, with real-time guidance and support Individual practice time within the class for hands-on learning and feedback Group practice to collaborate with peers and gain insights from each other Direct feedback as I observe students' playing and offer tips for improvement This course is perfect for students who want to take their piano skills to the next level by learning how to improvise with confidence, creativity, and expression. Students will leave the course with a stronger understanding of how to use advanced techniques to create music that feels both technically sound and emotionally resonant.
