This is the best way to learn grammar! Students find and correct mistakes in this ongoing, fun story. This class begins with Week 1 in the IEW Grammar book, Town Mouse, Country Mouse. Find it here: https://iew.com/fix-it-grammar-level-2-town-mouse-and-country-mouse-student-book Students search for and correct grammar errors. I guide and correct as we go along, and add a unique coloring system to help them see different parts of speech. I am very encouraging and many students enjoy the challenge of searching for errors and improving each day. IEW recommends that you do all the books in order, so you have hopefully completed Book 1 already. However, if you are an older student or you have had some grammar experience, you can still take this class if you haven't completed Book 1. This class does stand alone, and I believe it is also a good starting point to grammar. In this class we will define parts of speech, explain basic comma and capitalization rules, and introduce complex sentence patterns. Before beginning this class, students should have a basic understanding of sentences, and should know that sentences and names begin with a capital letter, and sentences end with end marks. That is all the prior knowledge needed for this class. After a concept is introduced, it is practiced, applied, and repeated within the context of the story. Each week reinforces and incrementally adds complexity. We will cover the basic 5 IEW "dress-ups" in this class. The IEW "Sentence Openers" are introduced in the second half of this book. We meet twice a week for 16 sessions over 8 weeks, which means we will cover 4 pages in one day. The IEW Grammar books are set up to practice grammar 5-10 minutes a day, for 4 days a week, for 30 weeks. We will cover "4 days," which equals one week, in EACH day of class. Your student will be just over halfway through this book in 8 weeks. ****For summer 2024**** I have a class that meets THREE times a week. This class is fast, but if your child needs to "catch up," this may work perfectly for you! Older kids are welcome in this class, as they may need to "start at the beginning" with grammar, and are more able to handle the faster pace. I agree with IEW that your student should take the time to rewrite each week after class. This may take an additional 10-30 minutes. I will not be checking this, but I do recommend it. Weeks 1-2 - nouns and pronouns. Weeks 3-4 - prepositions and types of verbs Weeks 5-7- adjectives, adverbs, quotation marks Weeks 8-10 - nouns, pronouns, prepositions, adjectives, adverbs Weeks 11-16- nouns, pronouns, adjectives, adverbs, coordinating conjunctions, adverb clauses I do teach several levels of IEW grammar and writing in many ways!
