Welcome to Strong Foundations Make Steady Readers! I am so happy you're here! In this one-on-one ongoing course, we will engage in first grade reading skills to build strong foundations in order to increase fluency and build confidence. We will practice reading/writing words and sentences using our newly learned phonics sounds and letters. We will read text that your child is interested in. Join me on this learning adventure to strengthen your child's English reading and speaking proficiency. You can drop in one week at a time or attend ongoing. This class is learner-directed as we progress. We will progress forward but also circle back and review as we go, so feel free to drop in any week! Each class will follow the same format 2x a week: Phonemic Awareness/Sounds: (10 min.) **Students will identify, substitute, & manipulate sounds in words. **Quick sound review saying letter name, sound, and word associated **Blending Board of words containing specific skills Spelling/Dictation: (10 min.) **Spelling words by hearing the beginning, middle, and ending sound. **Writing sentences by counting the number of words, then hearing the sounds in each word. Text Practice: (10 min.) **Read words that have inflectional endings. (e.g. -s, -es, -ing, -ed). **Read grade appropriate text, discuss tricky words as needed **Due to this class being learner adjusted, I will adjust and update as the course continues depending on your learners! I will spend more time in an area if needed. We need to dig deep in our skills so that we have strong roots to build our foundation! :-) Week 1: CCVC words with digraphs and beginning l and r blends. (flap, frog) Week 2: CVC words with and without digraphs (ch, sh, th, wh) Week 3: CCVC words with digraphs and beginning s and w blends. (stop, swim) Week 4: End blends: mp, st, lp, st, lk, sp, nd, nt (stomp, slept) Week 5: End blends: ng & nk (ing, ang, ong, ink, ank, unk) Week 6: Magic E Week 7: Digraph /ph/ and review Week 8: Vowel Teams (ea)/(ee) Week 9: Vowel Teams (ai)/(ay) Week 10: Vowel Teams (oa)/(oe) Week 11: Bossy R (er, ir, ur) Week 12: Bossy R (ar) Week 13: Bossy R (or, ore, oar) Week 14: Diphthongs: ou/ow Week 15: Long I: igh Week 16: Consonant le: cle Week 17: Vowel Digraphs: aw/au Week 18: Dipthongs: oi/oy Week 19: Soft C/ Soft G I use a variety of tools in the classroom to engage students such as the interactive white board, google slides, text on the screen, and document camera. Hello! I'm Ms. Holly, a certified Elementary Education teacher with both M.S. and B.S. degrees in Elementary Education (K-6).
With 24 years of experience teaching 1st and 3rd grade, I have had the opportunity to work with a diverse range of students, including gifted learners, those in special education, and newcomers. Additionally, I have experience as a reading coach, where I supported teachers in enhancing literacy instruction. I am trained in both Orton-Gillingham (OG) and LETRS, equipping me with research-based strategies to support foundational reading skills and structured literacy.
I have over four years of online ESL teaching experience with VIPKid, where I taught nearly 6,000 classes and maintained a 5-star rating. I love connecting with students worldwide, building their confidence, and creating a positive mindset about learning English. My students ranged in age from 4 to 12 years old.
Outside of teaching, I enjoy reading, watching my 10-year-old son play basketball, and spending time with my three cats and three dogs. I am a patient, expressive teacher with a big smile and would be honored to be part of your child’s English learning journey!
