1 hour per week. Students will have a small amount of research outside of class to gather facts about their topic. They will have time in class to collaborate with their team to develop their debate.Assessment
General feedback will be provided team-wide after each debate. When teams are waiting for their turn to debate, they may have the role of scoring the participating teams on a rubric (Did the team support their statement with a fact or opinion? Did the team speak respectfully to opposing team? Etc.). This will serve two purposes: 1. Keep teams engaged in the debate process when it is not their turn. 2. Provide general feedback to debating teams.Class Experience

Is the respectful exchange of ideas a lost art? In this ongoing debate club, participants ages 7-9 will practice informed and civil debate. They will learn debate terms, format, and how to support their points with evidence. They will work in teams of 2-4 to gather information about an age-appropriate topic. Each team will engage in a weekly debate. *PLEASE NOTE - there are files attached that can be used to help in planning a strong debate. **Age guidelines are to ensure material and pacing is of interest and appropriate for your child. Please adhere to the recommended age for placement.** **Also note that this is an ONGOING class with the following Outschool refund policy: "Cancel subscription at any point, no refund for past subscriptions. Learning Goals
This class supports Common Core State Standards: CCRA.ELA – Literacy SL3.1 – 5.1, 3.2 – 5.2, 3.3 – 5.3, 4.4 – 5.4, 5.5, 5.6
Students will:
1. Learn about the topic assigned.
2. Use research skills to prepare for the debate.
3. Work together in a team before and during the debate.
4. Practice public speaking skills.
5. Use critical thinking skills to “think on their feet” to come up with respectful and effective responses to the opposing team’s position.
