Class Experience

Students will use their prior knowledge to write a descriptive writing piece. I've always believed that all students can create a beautiful piece of writing when they write about what they know! During week 1, we will read a story together called "If You're Not From the Prairie" by David Bouchard, look at the pattern the he followed and discuss ideas to begin our writing pieces. During week 2, students will hear a sample piece of writing written by myself and we will begin planning our writing using a web. I will model how students can begin their writing. Then they will have some time to start writing their own. We will end week two by sharing a paragraph from each of our writing. Week 3, students can add more to their writing, ask questions and begin editing using a checklist. Nearing the end of class they may have time to sketch their place they chose. In our final week, students will present their final piece, share their successes and fill out a self assessment tool about their writing process. If their self assessment writing isn't finished before our class time is over, students can finish it on their own time.

Other Details

Supply List
Students will need lined paper, a pencil and eraser. I will upload a writing checklist and a self assessment that you can print off. Students will need the checklist for week 2 and the self assessment tool for week 4. Lastly, students will need a few pieces of blank paper for week 3 to begin their sketch to put with their writing piece. If students wanted to use chalk to sketch, I've had my students do both, pencil drawings and chalk drawings. Both turn out beautiful!

Teacher expertise and credentials

I am a supply teacher in Canada. I enjoy going from classroom to classroom teaching and meeting new students almost on a daily basis. Outschool has been a great fit for my love of meeting new students! I have enjoyed sharing my love of language arts and math with the Outschool learner community. In language arts, my absolute favourite is reading student's writing and hearing their creativity come out on paper. I also love teaching them letter sounds and showing them neat ways to remember them. Math is also a favourite area that I enjoy teaching in creative ways.

I have a bachelor of arts in geography (another favourite) and global studies and a bachelor of education. I have taught various grades from kindergarten to grade 4 in my own classroom in public schools. Now that I have a young family, I have chosen to substitute teach. While substitute teaching, I have been able to experience a wider variety of grades from pre-K to grade 9.

Through my experience working with a diversity of age groups, I have grown in my knowledge as a leader and I am continuing to learn my responsibilities as a teacher/ educator online and in the classroom. I believe that a teacher needs dedication, patience and good communication skills. A teacher also needs to have a sense of humor, organizational skills, creativity, experience, curriculum knowledge and an ability to collaborate with students, staff, parents and community members. It is my belief that a teacher must respect each student’s different learning style, needs and personalities. It is essential to prepare different approaches to teaching and management in order to give each student the opportunity to be successful. Most importantly, I believe a teacher needs to be flexible and aware of the constantly changing situations that occur inside and outside the classroom.

Something fun about me... I grew up on an island in British Columbia. I miss the mountains and the ocean as I now live in the prairies of Alberta, where I am a wife, mom and teacher. I am enjoying this new adventure of online teaching, as I continue to meet and teach some awesome students along the way! I look forward to meeting you in the classroom very soon!
