Class Experience

In the first half of the class, we will go over what a properly formatted manuscript is for fiction and nonfiction.

This will include font size, font, spacing, margins, paper, headers, footers, and first pages for both fiction and nonfiction.

For fiction, we will discuss chapter formats, paragraph formats, dialogue format, and internal thoughts format.

For nonfiction, we will discuss chapter formats, section formats, paragraph formats, sources formats, and table of contents/index formats.

In the second half of the class, the students will begin to properly format their manuscripts and the instructor will be there to help them find where and how to select the various word processor functions to obtain the format they want (fiction vs. nonfiction). We will have time to do the basic formatting for the entire manuscript and the students will start doing the individual formatting for specific issues (chapter, dialogue, sections, table of contents, etc.).
Learning Goals
Students will learn how to format their manuscripts in Microsoft Word or Google Docs to submit to publishers and/or contests.
