Class Experience

US Grade 4 - 7
In this class, the learner will use the Five—Step writing process to write a mystery short story. The learner’s story (or stories) will be written independently, but we will collaborate as much as needed along the way.

The topics covered will be the steps of the writing process: brainstorming and planning, editing, revising, and finishing a piece. We will circle back to a step if necessary.

This class will be both teacher and student-led.
During the first class, I will explicitly teach the main steps of the writing process, and we will discuss them. Next, the learner will begin planning or pre-writing. During each class, the learner may share what they’ve written and we’ll discuss the next steps or ideas.

Your learner may write some in class but most writing will be done outside of class.

Week 1: I will introduce the writing process. We will discuss it and plan/brainstorm ideas about what your learner would like to write.

Weeks 2 and 3: We will review the steps of the writing process.
The learner may share what they’ve brainstormed and anything they have done during the pre-writing step.
The learner may continue planning their writing or begin the next step: the first draft.

Weeks 4 to 7: We will discuss editing and revising. The learner may share what they’re working on. I will give feedback and support as needed and wanted. We’ll continue working together to make their story better.

Week 8: Learners should have a finished piece or be very close. If the learners are interested, they may share their completed piece. If their writing isn’t quite complete, we may meet for another week or so. Also, if the learner would like, I may help tidy up their writing (editing; without changing any meaning) before it’s complete.

The learners will need to be prepared to share ideas, receive verbal and written feedback, and do most of their writing outside of class.
