What's included
3 live meetings
3 in-class hoursHomework
2-4 hours per week. Different writing prompts are assigned for homework individually. This should take around 1-2 hours outside of class depending on how much time the student chooses to spend brainstorming on the topic as well as how long they choose to make their story. Students will have the option to share these with the class during the following lesson in the next workshop.Class Experience
In this creative writing camp, students will be exposed to numerous short stories and poems that will get their mind thinking critically and creatively. I will cover topics such as poetry, non-fiction, flash-fiction, spoken word, haikus, song writing, 6-word memoirs, and graphic story-telling. My class is structured with a welcome introduction activity followed by a small lesson, often incorporating a short video, and then it ends with students working on their writing and sharing it with the class workshop style. Each class will have a small homework assignment to keep students engaged in the off days while also offering something new to share with everyone each class. Learners will get to interact with myself as well as other students, but they will also be given writing strategies to fill their days when they are not in class, hopefully fostering a love for having "me-time" with their own creative writing journals.
Learning Goals
Students will learn about different genres and writing styles ranging from poetry, non-fiction, flash-fiction, spoken word, haikus, song writing, 6-word memoirs, and graphic story-telling. They will learn how to properly operate within a writing workshop, both offering and receiving constructive criticism for how to strengthen and improve their own pieces of writing.
Other Details
Supply List
All materials will be provided in class, but I encourage students to keep their own handwritten journal as the art of writing with pencil on paper is something special and is highly recommended for writing outside of class.
External Resources
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
Teacher expertise and credentials
Florida Teaching Certificate in English/Language Arts
Hello, everyone! My name is Mr. W, and I have been a teacher for nine years and hold a Master's Degree. I teach primarily English, literature, and writing courses, but I also offer college advising and test prep workshops along with yoga, which is by hobby outside of the classroom. I have taught all over the world aside from the USA, my favorite places being Portugal, China, and lastly, Vietnam, which is where I am currently living and working as a teacher and university guidance counselor.
I think education is vital to understanding the world around us. I still consider myself to be a student of the world, every day aiming to learn something new and making sense of what's around us in fresh ways. I embrace that every student learns differently, and my philosophy of education is to individualize learning for each of my students while making it a fun, remarkable experience.
A fun fact about me is when I am not teaching, I am either writing my own short stories and poems or traveling the world, having just visited my 49th country! I hope to one day visit them all. :) I look forward to seeing you in my classroom!
