In this 3-week course, students will explore selected poems from celebrated writers in order to analyze, discuss, connect, and create their own poems.

Class experience

Students will be able to appreciate, understand, analyze, discuss, and implement into their own writing elements of poetry such as: humor and absurdity, neologisms and nonsense words, characterization, dialogue, narrative, word choice, stanzas, sensory details, and rhyming.
A little bit about my background: Teaching is my favorite! I have been at it for about 15 years now, and my experiences range from the Elementary classroom to Middle and High school English. I have worked with children and adolescents in private, public, and charter schools, as well as clubs and after-school programs. I currently hold my Arizona Standard Teaching Certificate for grades 6-12 English, and K-12 Structured English Immersion. My love of reading and writing have prompted me to sponsor creative writing and reading clubs because I believe in teaching young people the power of understanding others (through reading) and understanding the self (through writing).
All poems and class texts will be provided. Students should keep a notebook and pencil or pen. This will be used for taking notes, and drafting, revising, and editing the weekly poem assignment (Learner Task). Students may type their finished poems if desired, but are encouraged to write with paper and pencil or pen in the beginning stages.
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
I do not expect any sensitive content to arise during this class, however, poetry can bring up memories or feelings in learners. If a learner has a reaction to a poem in which a personal story is shared, I will work to guide the learner to share appropriately for the context.
