Students will be able to develop their comics independently while incorporating the techniques given.Class Experience
Welcome! This class, will be a mix of independent drawing and interactive games. They should check in with me about how their comics are going and if they need feedback. My teaching style is student-led learning. I am open to suggestions from students about what they want to learn. Students MUST share their work to get advanced information and to learn overall. Students don't need to show their drawings, but should at least communicate their story. There will be some review from the intro course to check for student understanding. Please read below to see if you are ok with the content learned. Interaction at times is expected. The session may be ended early if participation is not happening, with a note. WEEK 1: Students will have a beginning ice breaker ex: Superfight. Students will describe how two random heroes given by the instructor can defeat each other. Graphic violence discussion is not allowed, only cartoon violence ex: character sitting on another. Students will work on their own comics and work on the examples below, as well as receive feedback from the instructor. The lesson will include: Title design, word balloons review, manga, AND comic expressions, story ideas discussion and story building, Drawing a simple character, Narrator in a story, Dialogue, face drawing. There is a QUICK review of some concepts from the intro course. There will be four short age-appropriate videos about character design which will we discuss. WEEK 2 Students will learn by first having a beginning ice breaker Superfight The instructor will have students watch and repeat drawing instructions on practice paper. (Please request if you are interested) The lesson will include designing a female body and hair to express character personality, ending a story, clothing in movement, hatching. Video about Fashion in design and ways animation and comics tell a story with visuals. Pauses will be made to give comic designing tips. WEEK 3 Students will play super-fight Students who want to watch and repeat drawing instructions on practice paper should pause briefly on their comics at this time. Narration game, sound efx, and icon game, Monotext, aspect to aspect review, male body drawing, sound effects as storytelling, mono text. With extra time, we will watch clips from animes like Kodocha, Dragonball, Special A to learn storytelling, action lines, and videos about character designing. Max 6 mins per session. If students are missing from the session, more content is added with discussion topics so the session does not end early. I do NOT draw characters that exist for example Spiderman etc due to time constraints. If students needs help drawing SIMPLE body designs it's important they speak up so I can help ********Students should tell me to slow down as needed. ****I work using photoshop, students may or may not use a digital app if they want to. This class is part lecture, how to draw comics, and character design. I'm not creating comics for the students they are making their own and I'm instructional support, offering tips, and ideas.
Learning Goals
Students will learn the foundations of creating a coherent comic book. They will develop their own independent thought process.
Other Details
Parental Guidance
Intro course is not a required to take this course, however it would help me to know if your child has no experience with comics.
Please contact instructor about any concerns regarding the class content, PLEASE thoroughly read the description. If your child is not sharing I cannot be 100% effective. I am always open to ideas to develop the class please tell me if there is something not included you would like your child to learn. There is some review of concepts from the intro course, this will only be a few minutes to check for student understanding.
Sessions may end early if lesson is not participated with and a message to the parent. Participation builds the lesson.
PLEASE do not admit a child that is 7 or younger the content will be lost on them.
Unfortunately, If your child asks to draw something highly detailed like a "dragon" or a horse. I may have to say no because of the amount of time it would take. However, I can help for smaller items (oven, book, dog etc). Please take the intro course first and see how their confidence is in creating a comic.
