Graphic Novel Book Club: Read, Write and Create Art!
Class experience
US Grade 5 - 8
The graphic novel is a booming format for young readers. In this ongoing course, learners will read passages from a variety of graphic novels and complete activities aimed to improve reading and writing skills. We will focus on skills such as fluency, intonation, vocabulary, reading comprehension, grammar, syntax and complex writing. The class will also include art projects for a variety of learning! (We have to create our own comics and graphic novels!) Another goal of the class is to...
There are three skills we aim to develop in this course: reading, writing and discussion. Learners will get better at reading aloud as they develop their fluency, rhythm, intonation and expression. Students will also build on-the-page skills such a reading comprehension, summarizing, making predictions, contextual thinking and vocabulary. Learners will also develop general writing skills such as sentence structure, grammar, spelling, paragraph formation and more. Finally, students will learn to formulate their own opinions and share their thoughts with others clearly and effectively. They will also build critical thinking skills through exciting discussion.
Making sure my learners feel safe, understood and comfortable in my class is my highest priority. We may discuss some sensitive topics in this class relating to the graphic novel we are reading that week. While all of the activities in this course will focus on building English and writing skills, some of the stories may address the following topics. We may also discuss the topics as a way to practice reading comprehension, critical thinking, and persuasive writing. Topics: - Eating disorders - War - Depression and anxiety - Sexuality - Homophobia - Racism Stories are carefully selected to ensure they address these topics in a way that’s appropriate for kids and young adults. All of these stories fall within the young adult genre or are commonly taught in middle-grade English courses. All of these topics will be discussed in an unbiased, secular and inclusive manner. If you have any questions about what will be covered and how, please do not hesitate to reach out.
