Class Experience

Orion Jackson: What if Percy had a twin he didn't know about?
Percy's Hiatus: What did Grover do during his quest to find Pan?
The Potter Chronicles: What was Harry's parents' story?
Narnia's Nemesis: What was the White Witch doing when Lucy and her siblings found the wardrobe?
A Wimpy Kid's Sidekick: What if Greg actually HAD touched the cheese?
Guardians of the Ring: What would the story look like from Aragorn or Samwise's point of view?

Every piece of fiction has a side-story waiting to be created. Fan fiction is the "Rogue One" of literature, exploring stories never told about characters we already love. Fan fiction is quickly becoming one of the most profitable genres for authors worldwide. It's accessible to all, not limited by pages, and a great way to get up-and-coming writers a name before publishing houses even get a chance to throw their hat in the ring.

Because students will be expected to create stories that stand alone, equipped with setting description, well-developed characters, plot lines, climaxes and resolutions, this genre is actually as challenging as writing an original story. The writer has to account for both avid readers who have read the series, and those who have not read the books to which they are referencing. This is a great exercise in succinct development; telling enough to keep the reader informed without over-informing those who already know.

Class 1: Determining our plot - we will discuss story ideas and create a sub-plot outline

Class 2: The free-write- we will share our outlines and prepare to free-write.

Class 3: We will share our free-writes, and discuss how to strengthen them. Then, we will pair up for peer-editing.

Class 4: We will share our peer-edited drafts and discuss ways to improve. Then, we publish!

Profile
Teacher expertise and credentials
I am a teacher who specializes in making so-called "boring" subjects interesting.

I have been teaching kids and adults of all ages for 14 years in subjects ranging from Elementary Math, English, and Social Studies to ESL to Theater and Leadership. My love for teaching has not limited me to any one subject, but rather expanded my interests in all of them.

My philosophy is that all learning can be fun; some subjects just take a little more creativity to make it fit the learner.
