**PLEASE NOTE** This is a SELF-PACED class and is PRE-RECORDED. THIS MEANS STUDENTS WILL WATCH THE PRE-RECORDED VIDEO. There are no live meetings. All interactions between students and the teacher will happen on the class page. This class will be presented via pre-recorded demonstration drawings. Students will engage in questions, class discussions on the classroom tab, assignments and be part of an artist critique, which will be guided by the instructor. Why Self-Paced? *MY Self-Paced classes ALWAYS cost less than the live versions of the same class! *Self-Paced classes are an excellent choice for families with busy schedules. *Content is exactly the same as live classes, at a lower fee. *Students can work at an independent pace. *Self-Paced classes are fantastic for international students whose time zone doesn't match the teacher's (US Mountain Time), *Self-Paced classes are a great alternative for students who are uncomfortable with live video chat. Our Self-Paced format will be as follows: Content: Video demonstration of the process will be posted. Videos will vary in length depending on the type of art being presented. Some may be as short as 10 or 15 minutes while others could be ½ hour or more. Student work is expected to take anywhere from 40 minutes to an hour, depending upon the student’s preferred pace. In this class, we will explore the design principle of symmetrical balance through the process of drawing, cutting, and gluing black construction paper onto a painted background. Background skills in painting/collage are helpful but not necessary. Detailed information of each lesson can be found in the syllabus.

Introduction to Notan; Learn Wet-On-Wet Painting Technique
Students will begin by painting the background in wet-on-wet watercolor technique. Once the painting is dry, it is a good idea to press it flat under a stack of books, if possible, to make it easier to work in lesson 2.
13 mins of video lessons
Lesson 2:
Create the Collage
Students will draw designs on black construction paper, cut out the designs, being careful not to lose any of the pieces, glue down the center, and then fit, flip and glue the pieces.

Hello! I am a K-12 licensed art teacher. and professional artist. I teach all kinds of art, including drawing, painting, pottery, fibers, sculpture, art history and culture, and frequently integrate math, literacy and other subjects with my art lessons! I received my Bachelors of Fine Art and teaching credentials from Metropolitan State College of Denver and my M.Ed. from the University of Colorado-Boulder. I have actually taught all ages, from 5 to adult! It is my passion to give students a safe and supportive place to develop their skills and a sense of accomplishment through the creative process. My teaching style is relaxed and nurturing, but sometimes I can't help but get really excited when I see a student make a connection or just simply feel successful! I also love to incorporate other content areas in my art classes whenever appropriate. Many of my lessons for younger kids are inspired by children's books. Projects for older kids might include history or culture. I also love to teach about famous artists of the past and present and bring their styles and processes into my art lessons.
Though art education has always been a space for nurturing students' social-emotional well-being. I recently completed my SEL certification, and am adding more art classes with a SEL focus to my catalog.
As a professional artist, I have participated in numerous group and solo exhibitions, sold my paintings and wares, and have been commissioned to do numerous murals in private homes as well as public spaces. My most well-known of which is the background on 3 walls of the tide pool exhibit in the Butterfly Pavilion in Westminster, CO. Most recently, my painting of giant sunflowers was reproduced on a traffic box on a street corner in Thornton, CO. I also make and sell art of all kinds, locally on a smaller scale. In addition to loving art, my husband and I love animals and currently share our home with a dog, two cats, and various birds and squirrels that visit our back yard every day. We love to travel, in particular to the gorgeous Rocky Mountains in our beautiful state of Colorado.
