Using the book, 'One Cent, Two Cent, Old Cent, New Cent', by Bonnie Worth, students will learn about money systems from around the world and throughout history as well as practicing identification, counting, and skills for making change.

Class Experience

In this six lesson class students will learn or review counting and making change, how monetary systems developed from barter, to silver and gold, to coins and our current monetary systems. The fun rhymes in the story will be used to encourage discussion. By te end of the course students will be more proficient in counting change and will have an appreciation for how monetary systems have evolved throughout our human history.  By combining the math and the history students will approach this math skill in a fun and novel way. 
Day 1- Introduce the book and begin the story pages 1 and 2 . Talk about the value of American coins 1 cent (penny) 5 cents (nickel) etc.... and do some simple addition and subtraction of coins to assess where each child's understanding is in relation to this topic. 
Day 2- Barter (pp.3-8) Read. Discuss. Play a game involving both barter and counting coins. 
Day 3- Use of metals for trade- melting down metals into coins. (pp. 9-16) Practice Counting up to $1.00 using various coins. 
Day 4-Minting Coins (pp. 17-18) Activity- making coins. 
Day 5- Different currencies around the world. (pp. 19-24) Practice making change. 
Day 6- United States Currency through the years (pp. 25-35). Assess Student progress and review coin value, counting coins and making change.

Hello, welcome to my classes. I am a passionate teacher with more than forty years experience teaching  preschoolers to adults. I have taught in  home-school preschools, private preschools and public preschools. I have trained teachers as an adjunct instructor at a community college, and have taught grades 2, 3, 4, and 5 in public and private schools. I've spent a large part of my career simultaneously holding workshops, and training and mentoring  child care professionals while teaching kids full time. More than 100 child care professionals have earned a CDA credential under my tutelage.  Many more have completed their associates degree in Early Childhood Education. 
While my professional experience is extensive, the heart of my passion is kids. I love  playing with children to help them learn.  I love teaching adults so they learn to teach and play with children in the ways that best fit each child.
