Group experience

US Grade 3 - 6
Do you love cats? This is the group for you! Come and join other fellow cat lovers to discuss your favorite animal. This is a great place for those who have cats and love to talk about them, or those who are interested in adopting a cat and want to find out more.

In the group we will have discussions and complete projects and activities on cat care, cat breeds, scientific facts about cats such as how they use their whiskers and tails to get around, and even famous cats in entertainment. Examples of these activities and projects will include:

Weekly opportunities for learners to share about their own cats with moderator prompts including:
-Tell a funny story about your cat
-How did you get your cat?
-What is your cat's name and why did you choose it?
-Your cat's favorite food or treat
-Favorite activity to do with your cat

Learners are encouraged to accompany these posts with pictures and/or videos of their cats, and/or appropriate materials found online to illustrate the topic.
If the learner does not have a cat but still would like to participate, they are encouraged to tell about a friend's cat, relative's cat, or just find out more about the subject (cat food, activities, etc) and report back. There will always be an alternate prompt for non-cat owners to engage and learn more about cats!

At least twice a month, research-based projects having to do with class topics such as:
-Post about a cat breed of choice including pictures and interesting facts
-Choose a favorite cat character from a book, movie or TV and show and tell us about them
-Choose a cat topic from history such as prehistoric cats, cats in Ancient Egypt, cats' journey throughout the world, etc. (provided by the instructor) to research more and bring facts and other media back to the group
-Learn more about cat care topics such as feeding, playing, health care, etc.
-Find a cat "current event" in the news and tell us about it

Moderator Role in the Cat Cabana
As the moderator of the group, I will:
-Open up each new topic or question with a prompt and example post to give learners a starting point.
-Respond to student posts with comments, follow up questions and facts and stories about my own cats at least every 2-3 days.
-Use my expertise as a lifelong cat owner and caregiver to provide advice for caring for a cat at home - but there is always so much to learn so I'm also looking forward to all of us learning more about cats together!
-Also watch for occasional activity and project ideas posted by myself, the moderator that learners can work on at home such as: how to draw a cat, how to make your own cat toys, a cat video to watch this week, and more!

Learners will be encouraged to comment on each others' posts in discussion board like format, modeled by the instructor.

Looking forward to seeing you in the Cat Cabana!

Guidelines
Welcome to the Cat Cabana! Looking forward to having you in this group to learn and share about cats. We want all of our learners to feel comfortable, connected, and safe. That's why we have 3 rules we ask you to follow: Be Kind, Be Safe, and Be Respectful. Be Kind - Help all learners feel welcome and included. Learners from all over the world, with different backgrounds, races, ethnicities, abilities, gender identities, religions and body types, participate in our Group. Always be nice and make others, especially new learners, know that they belong and are welcome. Teasing, name calling, or bullying anybody in our community? Nope. Not happening here Be Safe - Keep your personal information private and never ask other learners for theirs. Personal things are personal. We want to keep you safe on Outschool, but we also want YOU to understand how to be safe when you're meeting other learners or teachers. Keep your full name, home address, gaming or social media name, email, and school name private. Be Respectful - Treat others how you want to be treated. Keep language clean and information you share safe. If you wouldn't say it or share with your grandma, don't do it here. Swear words, racy videos, and violent images are not allowed. Treat Outschool like a public place, and when in doubt, keep things covered.
